What size portable blast pot is needed?
Vessel size is chosen by how long the operator needs to blast between refills, not by the area of the job. A 100 litre pot holds roughly 150 kg of chilled iron grit and a 800 litre pot roughly 1,200 kg, so a large vessel simply means fewer interruptions on a long shift. Weight and handling then set the practical limit: an empty 100 litre pot is around 90 kg and an 800 litre pot around 600 kg, which needs a forklift or a towable trolley on site.
What compressor does a portable blaster need?
Air consumption follows the nozzle bore: about 90 CFM at a 6 mm bore, 160 CFM at 8 mm, 250 CFM at 10 mm and 400 CFM at 12 mm, all at 7 bar. Site work is normally run from a diesel screw compressor sized with headroom, because pressure at the nozzle — not pot size — decides the cleaning rate. An inline moisture separator and air filter are essential, since wet air on a humid or coastal site will clog the abrasive and flash-rust the freshly blasted steel.
What is a dead man control on a blast pot?
A dead man control is a pneumatic handle at the nozzle that must be held closed for blasting to continue, so releasing it — or dropping the hose — shuts the machine down immediately. It is the primary safety fitment on a portable blaster, because an unattended pressurised blast hose whipping under 7 bar is one of the most serious hazards in site blasting. Can a portable blaster prepare steel for metallizing on site?
Yes — site metallizing of bridges, towers and tanks is normally prepared with a portable blast pot running angular chilled iron grit or aluminium oxide. ISO 2063 asks for Sa 3 cleanliness with a 60 to 100 micron angular anchor profile, and the zinc or aluminium must be sprayed before rust bloom forms, which in humid conditions means within hours.
