What is the difference between shot blasting and sand blasting?
Shot blasting throws abrasive mechanically from a spinning centrifugal turbine wheel, while sand blasting propels abrasive with compressed air through a nozzle. Shot blasting moves far more abrasive per minute — 120 to 400 kg per minute per wheel — which makes it the economic choice for repeat batches of steel components. Does a shot blasting machine need an air compressor?
An airless shot blasting machine does not need a compressor for the blast itself, because the turbine wheels are driven by electric motors of 5.5 kW to 15 kW each. Compressed air is only required for pulse-jet cleaning of the dust collector cartridges and for pneumatic controls, which is a small fraction of what an equivalent air blasting installation would consume. That difference in energy per square metre cleaned is the main reason high-volume steel plants specify airless machines.
What abrasive media is used in a shot blasting machine?
Airless shot blasting machines run steel shot from S-110 to S-460, steel grit from G-18 to G-50, or chilled iron grit. Round steel shot peens and cleans the surface and leaves a smoother, rounded finish; angular steel or chilled iron grit cuts a sharp anchor profile and is the correct choice when a coating has to bond afterwards. The media is recirculated through an airwash separator that screens out fines and broken particles so the profile stays consistent from the first part in the batch to the last.
What surface cleanliness does a shot blasting machine achieve?
