A nozzle worn one size up draws far more air for the same output. Gauge the bore every few weeks and change it before the compressor starts losing pressure at the pot.

When should a blast nozzle be replaced?

Replace a blast nozzle once the bore has worn about 1.5 mm oversize, or one nominal size up. A worn bore draws considerably more air for the same cleaning output — a 6 mm nozzle worn to 8 mm needs roughly 160 CFM instead of 90 CFM — so the compressor loses pressure at the pot and the blasting rate falls before anyone notices the nozzle is the cause. Gauge the bore with a drill shank or nozzle gauge every few weeks in production use and change it on measurement rather than on appearance.

What is the difference between tungsten carbide, silicon carbide and boron carbide nozzles?

The three materials differ mainly in wear life and price: tungsten carbide is the cheapest and wears fastest, silicon carbide sits in the middle, and boron carbide lasts longest and costs the most. Boron carbide is the economic choice where the machine runs a full shift on aluminium oxide or another aggressive angular abrasive, because nozzle changes cost more in downtime than the nozzle costs to buy. Tungsten carbide remains sensible for occasional use and for softer media such as glass bead. All three are supplied in long venturi form from 4 mm to 12 mm bore.

What compressor size does each blast nozzle bore need?

At 7 bar, a 4 mm bore draws about 25 CFM and suits a 5 to 7.5 HP compressor, 5 mm about 40 CFM on 10 HP, 6 mm about 90 CFM on 20 HP, 8 mm about 160 CFM on 30 to 40 HP, 10 mm about 250 CFM on 60 HP, and 12 mm about 400 CFM on 100 HP. Cabinet and detail work sits at the small end, structural steel at 8 mm, and tanks, hulls and large-area production blasting at 10 to 12 mm. Size the compressor with headroom, because pressure at the nozzle — not pot capacity — determines the cleaning rate.

What safety equipment is required for abrasive blasting?

The operator needs an air-fed blast helmet supplied through a dedicated breathing air filter, a blast suit, gloves and hearing protection, and the machine needs a fail-safe dead man remote control valve. The breathing air filter matters as much as the helmet, because the air comes from the same compressor that drives the blast and can carry oil, water and carbon monoxide. Safety whip checks on hose couplings prevent a pressurised hose separating under load.
